pure - Concert of the Caucasian Chamber Orchestra
On
8 March 2006 at 8 p.m. the Caucasian Chamber Orchestra played
classical Caucasian music of the 20th century in the Konzerthaus
Berlin. The
participants of the Ministerial Conference “Nature Protection
in the Caucasus” were invited to attend the concert.
The
Caucasian Chamber Orchestra
It
has been more than two years now, that Uwe
Berkemer, a German conductor living in Tbilisi,
Georgia, set up a chamber orchestra with the best musicians
from all over the Caucasus. The Caucasus, located between
the Black and Caspian Sea, is home to different nations
and ethnic groups which has been a troubled region for
centuries.Uwe Berkemers vision was and is, to demonstrate
that music is a unifying force across borders and boundaries;
a symbol for peace and mutual understanding. The Caucasian
Chamber Orchestra is a permanent, full-time performing
group of 17 professional musicians, based in Tbilisi.
KfW
Bankengruppe is, amongst others, supporting this
concert of the Caucasian Chamber Orchestra, and so we
are proud to present the orchestra in Berlin.

Ecotopia
- Contemporary Art and Ecology in the Caucasus
Mountains,
swamps, hills and rivers are spiritual places, places of history
and culture, a mirror and memory of human behaviour. The Caucasus
is an area of a large variety of animal and plant species,
it is rich in diverse landscapes and ecological systems. Unsustainable
and short-sighted use of this heritage, caused by economic
necessities of its people and a certain level of unawareness
endangers this precious region. The efforts of citizens, politicians,
organisations and artists to halt the decay of nature and
the irretrievable loss of its diversity are a substantial
contribution to safeguard the ecological system of the Caucasus.
In
this context, the art exhibition Ecotopia
- Contemporary Art and Ecology in the Caucasus was brought
into being, initiated by the Goethe
Institute of Tbilisi. The project is financed by the KfW
Entwicklungsbank in line with the budget of the Caucasus Initiative
of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and
Development which aims at transboundary cooperation of the
countries of the Caucasus, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan.
Artists
from these Caucasian countries together with German artists
were invited to reflect on the role of nature and its protection.
In the course of a 4 week stay in the Caucasus region there
was an encounter arranged, joining artists, curators, scientists,
politicians, journalists and activists for one week in Tbilisi.
These meetings, lectures and presentations were followed by
field trips in and through the region. By this, the artists
were able to learn more about the environmental situation
of the Caucasus region and to experience its natural heritage.
The works of art, which aroused from the reflection of this
experience, will be shown at an exhibition during the conference
Nature Protection in the Caucasus taking place in Berlin 9-11
March 2006.
The
Art Exhibition was accessible during the conference on 9 March
2006 at the KfW building in Berlin.
Under
the auspices of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation
and Development.
Organised by Ecologic - Institute for International and European
Environmental Policy.
